"Video wall" displays run XPe
Mar. 11, 2008

Samsung has introduced 70- and 82-inch flat panel displays incorporating computers running Windows XP Embedded (XPe). Targeting signage applications including video walls with up to 25 monitors, the 700DXn and 820DXn have 1920 x 1080 resolution, and sport dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPUs.

The only difference between the 700DXn and 820DXn is their display panels, and resulting size and weight. The 700DXn has a 70-inch screen with 1920 x 1080 resolution, a 600-nit brightness rating, and a 5000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. The 820DXn is very similar, but spreads the pixels over an 82-inch screen with 3000:1 contrast ratio.

Both monitors have a host of input types. For receiving video signals from external PCs, they feature VGA and DVI connectors. Closed-circuit TV cameras are accommodated via BNC connectors. For receiving signals from DVD players and other A/V equipment, they have composite, S-Video, component, and HDMI connectors. Maximum resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels, easily supporting 1080p HD video.

So far, so good, but what makes the devices particularly distinctive is that they do not necessarily need an external video source to generate a picture. Each monitor includes an embedded computer that runs Windows XP Embedded from flash. The embedded PC can be programmed with content over a network connection by one or more PCs running Samsung's Magicnet Pro software. As seen below, Magicnet Pro has a simple, drag-and-drop user interface, and is said to allow the construction of "video walls" five monitors wide and five high. It also includes asset-management features, and can be used to view any given display's fan speed, temperature, or backlighting status, Samsung says.

The embedded PC is based on a 1.8GHz, dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU. It boasts integrated ATI RS690T graphics, with a wide variety of claimed 2D and 3D graphics acceleration capabilities. The southbridge is an SB600. Also on board are 512MB of DDR2 DRAM, 4GB of flash memory, and a gigabit Ethernet interface.

Key features and specifications listed by Samsung for the 700DXn and 820DXn are as follows:
  • Processor -- AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU clocked at 1.8GHz
  • Memory -- 512MB DDR2 DRAM, 4GB flash
  • Display:
    • 70-inch screen with 5000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (700DXn)
    • 82-inch screen with 3000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (820DXn)

  • Other I/O:
    • VGA input
    • BNC inputs
    • DVI
    • Composite video inputs
