"Pistol grip" rugged handheld runs Windows CE 5.0

Intelligent Instrumentation has added a new model to its rugged handheld data-collection terminal family. The Pistol Grip LANpoint Mobile comes with a choice of Windows CE 4.2 or 5.0, supports Bluetooth, WiFi, and GSM/GPRS wireless, and offers a wider range of scanning options than earlier models, according to the company.

The Pistol Grip is based on a PXA255 processor clocked at 400 MHz, and is equipped with 128 MB of SDRAM and 96 MB of flash, twice the standard memory complement of the earlier models. Five integrated scanner options are available, including a long-range 1D laser that can read barcodes from a distance of 17 to 35 feet, according to Intelligent Instrumentation.

The company lists the following key features and specifications for the Pistol Grip LANpoint Mobile:

- 3.5-inch QVGA, 16-bit color
- adjustable backlight
- transflective, sunlight readable

  - 3.5 mm headset jack
  - 90 dBa buzzer/beeper, programmable volume, pitch, and duration

- omni-directional imager -- supports signature capture
Wireless options:
- Cingular GSM/GPRS
- 802.11b/g WiFi
- Bluetooth
Operating system choices:
- Windows CE 4.2 -- supports .NET CF 1.0
- Windows CE 5.0 -- supports .NET CF 2.0

The Pistol Grip LANpoint Mobile is currently available, according to the company. Pricing was not disclosed.
