Cingular ships first US Windows Mobile 5 smartphone

Cingular has introduced what it claims is the first "smartphone-class" handset in the US to feature the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system. The 2125 Smartphone supports quad-band international roaming, Bluetooth, and Cingular's nationwide EDGE high-speed data network, according to the company.

The 2125, manufactured by HTC of Taiwan based on the HTC "Faraday" reference design, is claimed to be the first Windows Mobile 5 handheld in the US with a "phone-style" keypad. Other recently introduced models such as the Palm Treo 700w and the Verizon XV6700 sport full, but small, QWERTY keyboards and are aimed primarily at mobile professionals.

The 2125 is based on a 200 MHz TI OMAP 850 processor and is equipped with 64 MB of SDRAM and 64MB of Flash memory. It features a 2.2-inch QVGA 64K color TFT screen and a 1.3 Mpixel camera with camcorder capability. Interface ports include Bluetooth, IrDA, and mini-USB, and it also provides a mini-SD card slot for Flash memory expansion.

The GSM quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) device takes advantage of Cingular's roaming agreements with carriers in more than 165 countries for voice and 95 countries for data to provide wide-ranging international communications capability, according to the company.

Cingular says the 2125 provides a "rich multimedia experience" based on Windows Media Player 10 Mobile. The device supports multiple audio formats including MP3, AMR, AAC, WAV, and WMA, as well as MPEG-4 video streaming.

"The Cingular 2125 Smartphone gives our customers a cost-effective, feature-packed solution that meets their needs, whether they're a larger company engaged in global business communications or an individual wanting a superior, high-speed email and Web browsing experience," said Cingular vice president Jeff Bradley.

Cingular is currently selling the 2125 for $199 to its US subscribers, based on a two-year contract and "qualified voice plan."
