"Stand-alone" security app protects Windows Mobile devices

Bluefire Security Technologies has released a "stand-alone" security software product for Windows Mobile devices. Device-resident Mobile Security Professional Edition protects handheld devices from web-based attacks, and ensures that a lost or stolen device, and the data residing on it, are not compromised, according to the company.

Key features of the product, as listed by the company, include:

LAN/WAN firewall -- Filters traffic to the device in compliance with administrator-controlled port and protocol policies
Intrusion Prevention -- Scans inbound network packets to identify and prohibit sophisticated attacks
Authentication -- Enforces power-on PIN or password requirements
Device Wipe -- After a set number of failed log-in attempts, data residing on the device is wiped
Encryption -- Protects data stored in secure folders on the device or on removable storage cards with AES 256-bit encryption; a "logout and encrypt" feature can be invoked to automatically encrypt data at power-off
Integrity Manager -- Monitors core system assets and automatically alerts the user of an integrity violation
Real-time Logging -- Captures and retains detailed logs of security events such as successful and invalid login attempts, password resets, quarantine overrides, port scans, firewall activity, and integrity violations; logged events are configured by the system administrator
AntiVirus -- Professional Edition comes bundled with Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition PDA software

Last summer, Bluefire published survey results indicating that 84 percent of respondents expressed concern about the security of access to web-based email accounts and 67 percent named web access via their wireless devices as the top concern. The survey also noted that these users appear to be fully aware of the security implications of expanded smartphone use and are "demanding" that their employers, wireless industry suppliers, and partners "do something about it," according to Bluefire.

Bluefire CEO Mark Komisky stated, "With certain smartphone models reaching a $99 price point, the market is rapidly moving from high-end, enterprise-only to mass market. Bluefire's Professional Edition is ideally suited for bundling and channel opportunities to reach this underserved market."

Mobile Security Professional Edition is available for download from the company's website download area, and is priced at $50. A 14-day free trial is also available.
