Unlike many Windows CE-based barcode scanners, the CA50 focuses tightly on its mission, omitting PDA functionality. For added durability, it eschews fragile LCDs in favor of a simple, five-line monochrome display. The device can withstand six four-foot drops to concrete, and is sealed to the IP40 standard, Motorola said.
Motorola says the CA50 can be deployed either as a personal or shared device. In the latter capacity, logging in loads the device with the correct employee usage profile. Supported barcode scanning capabilities include 1D, UPC/EAN, and Code 128, among others.
Featuring 802.11a/b/g wireless networking, the CA50 is specifically designed to be a VoIP phone, with features such as a microphone, speaker, headset jack, ringer, and vibrator. According to Motorola, it can be used for one-to-one voice calls, or one-to-many walkie-talkie-style broadcasts.
With separately available Motorola VoIP gateways, the CA50 can be integrated into a company's wired phone system. Standard Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Cisco's Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) will be supported in future revisions. Voice compression is based on H.323.
