| 2nd-gen OMAP processors for 2.5/3G handsets support Windows Mobile |

Texas Instruments (TI) unveiled its new OMAP 2 processor architecture for 2.5 and 3G mobile phones at a press conference at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France today. TI says its next-generation processors based on OMAP 2 will provide features such as interactive 3D gaming, 4+ megapixel cameras, digital camcorders, TV, and more. According to TI, the processors support devices running Microsoft's Windows Mobile embedded operating system.
TI says OMAP 2 will boost video performance by 4X and 3D graphics by 40X, and that its new OMAP 2 chips will support features such as up to 6 megapixel cameras, up to DVD-quality video, interactive gaming console functionality, Hi-Fi music with 3D sound effects, analog and digital TV broadcast reception, high-speed wireless connectivity, greater than VGA resolution color LCD displays, and more.
"With tens of million of camera phones shipped, the digital camera in the smartphone has moved from a trendy feature to a fundamental requirement," commented Alain Mutricy, TI vice president and Cellular Systems general manager. "Now with [OMAP 2], we will bring your personal entertainment and communications center to your mobile phone."
Initial OMAP 2 processors
TI's first two OMAP 2 processors, designated the OMAP2410 and OMAP2420, are based on ARM11 processor cores, and are code-compatible with TI's first generation OMAP processors. - OMAP2410 -- The OMAP2410 chip includes an ARM1136JS-F core, a TI programmable DSP, a 2D/3D graphics accelerator offering up to 2 million polygons per second, integrated camera interface, sophisticated DMA controller, and more.
- OMAP2420 -- In addition to all the features of the OMAP2410, the OMAP2420 processor adds a programmable imaging and video accelerator supporting 4 megapixel still capture applications, full-motion video encode or decode in CIF to VGA resolution. The OMAP2420 also can output images onto an external TV.
 OMAP2420 Block Diagram (Click image for larger view) Both new TI OMAP 2 processors provide extensive power management features, according to TI, and can be used in conjunction with TI's TML92230 energy management companion chip, which replaces any discrete power management devices for reduced system cost and board area. Additionally, the OMAP 2 processors can make use of TI's subsystem building blocks for MPEG4, MP3, H.263, H.264, WMV, OpenGL ES and more.
The OMAP2410 and OMAP2420 processors and TML92230 power management companion chip are scheduled for first sample shipments during the first half of 2004.
