New UMPC runs Windows XP Embedded on SSD

Raon Digital has introduced a "second-generation UMPC" that weighs just over a pound and has a built-in QWERTY keypad. The Everun runs either Windows XP Home or XP Embedded, and offers a "panorama" mode that allows users to pan around a 1680 x 1050-pixel virtual desktop, according to the company.

The Everun's user interface features an auto-rotating 4.8-inch wide LCD with 800 X 400-pixel resolution, backlit function keys, and a sensor that converts finger motion into mouse movement. The device also includes built-in stereo speakers.

The Everun is reportedly equipped with 256 or 512 MB of RAM, plus an AMD Geode LX 900 processor clocked at either 500 or 600 MHz. Users can select 30 or 60 GB 1.8-inch hard drives loaded with Windows XP Home, or a 6 GB solid-state drive (SSD) loaded with either Windows XP Home or Windows XP Embedded.

Standard wireless connections include integrated Bluetooth and 802.11b/g, while an HSDPA (high-speed downlink packet access) modem and WiBro (802.16e) are optionally available in the Korean market. Ethernet connectivity requires an optional docking station that also includes a fast battery charger, an optical digital (SPDIF) output, plus an S-Video TV output. A car docking station provides power plus other capabilities yet to be announced.

The company claims an operating time of between 6 and 7 hours with the standard 2300 mAh battery. An optional 4000 mAh battery reportedly will power the unit for as long as 12 hours.
