Slate-style tablet PC runs Windows
Sep. 30, 2008

Fujitsu Computer Systems added a new device to its long-running "Stylistic" series of slate-style tablet PCs. The ST6012 features a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo, a 12.1-inch touchscreen, 1.3 megapixel camera, up to 320GB of storage, and optional HSUPA (high speed uplink packet access) networking, says Fujitsu.

Fujitsu has been a longtime proponent of slate-style tablets, such as its earlier ST5020. The ST6012, apparently the first in a new 6xxx series of devices, uses Intel's 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo ULV SU9400. Built on the chipmaker's 45nm process, this CPU has a TDP of 10 Watts, and, while Fujitsu doesn't quote specific numbers for battery life, the ST6012 is said to operate "for a long period."

The SU9400 is combined with Intel's GS45 northbridge and ICH9M southbridge, providing the ST6012 with a 3MB second-level cache, 800MHz frontside bus, and memory expansion up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM. Fujitsu adds that the device will be upgradable to 8GB of RAM, as soon as compatible memory modules are available.

Mass storage is provided by 120GB, 160GB, or 320GB hard disk drives spinning at 5400rpm. Alternatively, says Fujitsu, a 2.5-inch, 64GB SSD (solid state drive) is also available.

Like other slate-style tablets, the ST6012 has a portrait display that presumably can be rotated into landscape mode, though the company does not specify. The device has 1280 x 800 resolution, plus an active digitizer that requires use of the pen bundled with the unit.

Other user interface features include a rear-facing 1.3 megapixel camera, and ten programmable application launch keys. For added security, there's a fingerprint sensor, a TPM (trusted platform module), and an integrated smartcard reader.

The ST6012 ships with a standard gigabit Ethernet port, but no standard wireless capabilities. Purchasers can select either Atheros 802.11b/g or Intel 802.11a/b/g/n modules for wireless local area networking, according to the company.

Meanwhile, HSUPA (high speed uplink packet access) wide area networking is said to be available too, courtesy of a Sierra Wireless MC8790 module. All three listed wireless options have a PCI Express Mini Card form factor; Fujitsu did not say if the WAN and WLAN options may be installed on the ST6012 simultaneously.

Other expansion potential on the tablet includes an SD slot, a SIM card slot, and an ExpressCard slot. The ST6012 includes audio 1/0, two internal microphones, two USB 2.0 ports, a VGA port, and a docking connector for an optional port replicator, adds Fujitsu.

Features and specifications cited by Fujistu for the ST6012 include:
  • Processor -- Intel Core 2 Duo Core 2 Duo ULV SU9400 clocked at 1.4GHz
  • Memory expansion -- Up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, via two DIMM slots
  • Display -- 12.1 inch touchscreen display with 1280 x 800 resolution
  • Storage -- 2.5-inch hard disk drives, 5400rpm, with 120GB, 160GB, or 320GB capacities; 64GB SSD (solid-state drive)
  • Camera -- 1.3 megapixel camera (rear facing)
  • Keys -- 10 programmable keys, fingerprint reader
  • Networking:
    • LAN -- Gigabit Ethernet with RJ45 connector
    • WLAN -- 802.11b/g via Atheros module, or 802.11a/b/g/n via Intel module (both optional)
    • WAN -- Sierra Wireless MC8790 module, provides HSUPA connectivity with 7.2Mbit/sec. downloads and 2Mbit/sec. uploads (optional)
  • Other I/O:
      VGA output
    • 2 x USB 2.0
    • audio mic in/line out
    • 2 x internal microphones
  • Expansion:
    • SD slot
    • ExpressCard slot
    • SIM card slot
  • Battery type -- 7800mAh "second battery" (first battery not detailed)
  • Operating temperature -- 5 to 35 deg. C
  • Dimensions -- 12.8 x 8.7 x 1.25 inches (325 x 220 x 31.7mm)
  • Weight -- 3.5 pounds (1.6kg)
According to Fujitsu, the ST6012 runs either Windows XP Tablet Edition or Windows Vista Business. Pricing and availability were not detailed, but the device appears to be available now.
