Scanning handheld gains GSM telephony
May 23, 2008

Honeywell has announced a data-collection handheld that runs Windows Mobile 6.0 and features built-in GSM telephony. The Dolphin 7600 offers linear and 2D barcode scanning, includes a VGA-resolution camera for capturing signatures, and withstands multiple five-foot drops to concrete, the company says.

This new device is closely related to an earlier incarnation of the Dolphin 7600 sold by Hand Held Products, which Honeywell acquired at the end of 2007. As well as acquiring a new badge, however, the Dolphin has also switched from Windows CE 5.0 to Windows Mobile 6.0. The new operating system provides support for the handheld's built-in quad-band (850/900/1800/1900MHz) GSM telephony, said to support both voice calls and data networking.

As before, the device uses proprietary Adaptus Imaging Technology 5.0, which reads linear and 2D barcodes and captures digital images. Though its specifications were not provided, the integrated "5300SR VGA area imager" is apparently optimized for relatively close focusing, relevant to capturing signatures or making a pictorial record of damage to a parcel.

And, yet again, the Dolphin has Bluetooth 1.2 personal area networking, along with 802.11b/g wireless. Honeywell touts the device's advanced power management, said to let it "last an entire work-shift without recharging."

The Dolphin comes with a choice of keyboards: either a 38-key alphanumeric keyboard (as seen above), where a shift key must be used to type in numbers, or a 29-key numeric keyboard (as seen at right). Its impact-resistant housing and magnesium-alloy internal chassis, with component shock mounts, are said to survive multiple five-foot drops to concrete.

The device uses Samsung's S3C2440 processor, clocked at 400 MHz, with 128MB of RAM and 128MB of flash storage. Previously, the Dolphin 7600 had an SD slot for memory expansion; still present, the slot has now shrunk to microSD size.
