Windows Mobile twins have GPS, Java

E-ten has announced a pair of phones that run Windows Mobile 6.0 and include built-in GPS functionality. The Glofiish M750 and M810 include slide-out 33-key keyboards, 2.8-inch touchscreen displays, two megapixel autofocus cameras, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and Java, according to the company.

In fact, the Glofiish M750 and M810 are near-identical twins, separated only by the fact that the M810 features tri-band (2100/1900/850MHz) UMTS/HSDPA telephony, plus a fixed-focus VGA-resolution camera for video conferencing. Both phones include quad-band (850/900/1800/1900MHz) GSM, and both offer two megapixel autofocus cameras.

The devices use a Samsung S3C2442 processor clocked at 500MHz, and supplied with 256MB of flash storage and 64MB of RAM. Their 2.8-inch touchscreen displays have 320 x 240 pixel resolution, like the majority of other phones.

Featuring a Micro SD slot for storage expansion, the M750 and M810 have 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 networking built-in. GPS is provided too, via the virtually inescapable SiRF starIII chipset, which can track more than 20 satellites and has a claimed TTFF (time to first fix) of approximately one second.

The operating system on the Glofiish is Windows Mobile 6 Professional, with the usual push email, Microsoft Office document editing, and media playing capabilities. E-Ten emphasizes the inclusion of a JVM (Java virtual machine) -- not normally part of Windows Mobile -- that allows the phones to download and play games and other applications written in Java.

While E-Ten did not release pricing or availability information, the M750 and M810 appear to be available now. Last month, Acer entered into an agreement to buy E-Ten. The deal is expected to close during the third quarter, but no changes in the company's product line have been announced.
