Mobile security software supports dual mode handsets

Certicom has released a cross-platform, client side security toolkit with support for dual mode handsets. Security Builder IPSec 3.0 allows developers to "easily" embed standards-based VPN access into resource-constrained devices running Windows Mobile and Windows CE, among other embedded OSes, according to the company.

Certicom says that Security Builder IPSec supports the latest industry standards, including IP Key Exchange version 2 (IKEv2) and MOBIKE, making it useful for advanced applications such as Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA), Internet Multimedia Subsystems (IMS), Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC), and other emerging third generation partner project (3GPP) services. MOBIKE aims to ensure that secure VPN connections are not dropped as users roam between networks.

Security Builder IPSec employs Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC)-based algorithms that enable faster key exchanges. IKEv2, including MOBIKE and Mobile IP, offers greater standardization and faster IPSec tunnel negotiations for better performance than is normally achievable with traditional IPSec, according to Certicom.

According to Jim Alfred, director of product management at Certicom, "FMC offers a lot of promise -- the challenge is providing seamless mobility together with robust security. For those manufacturers developing dual-mode handsets, the inclusion of MOBIKE and Mobile IP should be considered part of the overall solution at the outset."

Security Builder IPSec includes pre-defined profiles for compatibility with most leading VPN gateways including those from Alcatel, Cisco, Lucent and Nortel. It supports multiple platforms including Windows CE, Windows Mobile 5, Windows XP, Linux, and Symbian.

Security Builder IPSec is available immediately and priced with a license fee and royalties based on the number of devices, according to Certicom.
