Nov. 02, 2006

The Nov. 1 online virtual launch of Windows Embedded CE 6.0 included numerous technical sessions and interactive virtual labs describing various aspects of the new release. Those sessions, which span a broad range of introductory and advanced topics, are now available for on-demand viewing.

Access to the sessions and labs listed below is available by signing in here with a Windows Live ID, which may be obtained by registering here. Be sure to also read our highly detailed coverage of the launch of Windows Embedded CE 6.0, which provides a comprehensive introduction to what's new in CE 6.0, as well as the "related stories" listed at the bottom of this page.

Technical sessions

The available Windows Embedded CE 6.0 technical sessions include:
  • Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Overview -- The new release is packed with changes and updates to kernel and memory model, operating system and application development tools and supported operating system features. Watch this session to get a fast-track update on why you should be developing your next embedded device on CE 6.0. Speaker: Mike Hall, Senior Technical Product Manager, Microsoft

  • Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Kernel and Memory Architecture -- This session provides a walk through of the operating system architecture and memory model changes, and the capabilities these changes enable. It also discusses performance, operating system size, BSP changes and OAL design. Speaker: Doug Boling

  • Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Tools -- Platform Builder for Windows Embedded CE 6.0 is fully integrated into Visual Studio 2005. This introductory level session walks through the process of bringing up a CE 6.0 device using Platform Builder. It covers creating an OS design, customizing the set of included features, adding applications, downloading the OS to a device and debugging. The session will also give an overview of the new tools included in Platform Builder including the Run-time image viewer and the graphical registry file editor. Speaker: Jonathan Lyons, Program Manager, Microsoft

  • Application Development for Windows Embedded CE 6.0 -- Windows Embedded CE 6.0 supports a number of application development options including Win32, MFC and Managed code using C# and Visual Basic .NET. In this demo-filled session you'll get an overview of how to write applications for a CE 6.0 operating system image using Visual Studio 2005. To highlight the strengths of each development option we'll write the same application using Win32, MFC and Managed code. Speaker: Paul Yao, Business Alliance Manager, Utimaco Software

  • Access Windows Embedded CE Source Code -- Find out what Windows CE Source Code is available, what you can do with it and how you can access it! Speaker: Nic Sagez, Product Manager, Microsoft

  • Understanding the Windows Embedded Advantage -- This presentation contrasts and compares the Windows CE 6.0 operating system and various flavors of Linux as they pertain to embedded operating system development. Speaker: Andreas Penna, Product Manager, Microsoft

  • Developing Device Drivers for Windows Embedded CE 6.0 -- The new kernel architecture in Windows Embedded CE 6.0 has a significant impact on device drivers. This session covers the details of the changes needed to make existing drivers work with CE 6, best practices and various tips and tricks learned over 9 years of developing drivers for Windows CE devices. Speaker: Steve Maillet

  • Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Real-time -- This session looks at the architecture of Windows Embedded CE 6.0 and how it can support the creation of real-time devices. It discusses how to achieve real time by understanding how hardware, operating system, and application must work together. We will look at what tools can be used to design and to analyze the real-time system. Speaker: John Hatch
