TerreStar Corporation has announced plans to launch a dual-mode satellite/terestrial phone service using Windows Mobile handsets. The service, which will rely on both TerreStar's TS-1 satellite and AT&T's cellular network, will be available to North American customers in mid-2009, according to the company.
The handset (pictured at left), so far known only as the "EB-TerreStar reference design," is said to measure just 4.7 x 2.5 x 0.8 inches. It will connect to the satellite and terrestrial networks, offering voice calls, "4G" HSPA (high speed packet access) networking data mode, push e-mail, and other typical Windows Mobile features. Satellite service will likely be limited to basic voice and data services, and likely carry steep usage-based fees.
