| Pistol-grip data collector runs Windows Mobile |
Sep. 26, 2007
Hand Held Products Inc. has added a new data-collection handheld to its Dolphin 7000 series. The Windows Mobile 5.0-based Dolphin 7850 features an ergonomic design, rugged construction, and power management claimed to enable it to be used more than ten hours without recharging.

Compared to the Dolphin 7600 that was released in March, the 7850 steps up to a Marvell PXA520 processor clocked at 520 MHz, and gains a larger 3.5-inch display. It offers a pistol grip, "lightweight balanced design" and targets "scan-intensive in-premise applications," the company said.
The device once again uses Hand Held's Adaptus Imaging Technology 5.0, said to capture linear and 2D bar codes as well as digital images. The unit now includes 802.11b/g wireless networking, while Bluetooth 1.2 may optionally be added.
The company's specifications refer to a "24-key calculator-style numeric keyboard with scrolling alpha" and a "38-key calculator-style numeric keyboard with full alpha." While there is only one set of hardware keys, two different layouts may apparently be selected, according to a user's preference.
Key features of the Dolphin 7850, according to the manufacturer, include:- Processor -- Marvell PXA270, clocked at 520 MHz

In addition to the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, the device comes with Hand Held's Dolphin SDK for C/C++, C#, and Visual Basic development tools (requires Visual Studio 2005 Professional editions or higher). It also includes PowerNet Terminal Emulation (TNVT, 3270, 5250), SOTI's remote device management tool, and Z-Space Technologies's ITScriptNet data validation software.
