 Bytemobile, a supplier of software to cellular carriers, announced data compression software for Windows Mobile devices claimed to speed up web browsing "significantly." The "Optimization Client" (left) speeds page downloads by up to 12 times, and reduces data transfer by up to 60 percent, claims Bytemobile.

Bytemobile's new Optimization Client is a client-side implementation of the company's EBO (embedded browser optimization) technology, now marketed as part of a "Web Fidelity Service" product line that also includes WAP gateways, content filtering, and other technology. It's claimed that if EBO -- involving compression, TCP optimization, and other techniques -- is used both on a carrier's servers and on a Windows Mobile handset, Web pages can download up to 12 times faster than they otherwise would have.

Bytemobile also says that EBO technology reduces the volume of data transferred -- both upstream and downstream -- by from 40 to 60 percent, increasing capacity and efficiency for carriers. There's no word, however, on whether carriers adopting EBO will pass on the savings to customers in the form of cheaper data plans!
Given that Windows Mobile doesn't come with EBO software out of the box, Bytemobile's first tack was to introduce it to phone users via modified web browsers. In 2007, for example, the company announced a collaboration with Access, via which the latter company would put EBO into its NetFront browser. Bytemobile earlier collaborated with Opera Software, whose Opera Mini browser was first released in January 2006. At the time, Bytemobile claimed a 3x speedup for the combination of Opera Mini and a server-side package it sells called OSN Monaco.
Now, thanks to the newly released Optimization Client, EBO can operate with any Web browser on a Windows Mobile device, according to Bytemobile. The client is said to be "easy" to download and install, to consume little memory, and to deliver a "transparent" optimization experience.
The company says the Optimization Client requires no changes to a Windows Mobile device's web browsers or other client software. As shown with Internet Explorer Mobile at the top of our story, the software adds an "optimization level" menu that allows users to experiment with its settings.
Adrian Hall, Bytemobile chief marketing officer, said, "Operators today are faced with a rapidly growing burden on network resources during an economic downturn. The Windows Mobile client-server optimization solution enables them to manage their infrastructure costs, while providing their customers with fast, rich web browsing."

Bytemobile said its Optimization Client supports all Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6 devices, but provided no information as to how and when it will be supplied to end users. The company says its products have already been deployed by more than 100 carriers in 54 different countries.
