Vehicle-mount computer includes Windows CE or Windows Mobile

Intermec will soon ship a vehicle-mount computer said to be less than half the size of competing devices. The compact, ruggedized CV30 boasts a 6.4-inch VGA LCD screen, packs a built-in heater, and comes with a choice of Windows CE 5.0 or Windows Mobile 5.0, according to the company.

The CV30 is based on a 520 MHz Intel PXA270 XScale processor, and is equipped with 128 MB of SDRAM and 128 MB of DiskOnChip flash. The device measures 7.45 x 6.95 inches, and targets both vehicle-mounted applications -- such as fork lifts -- and stationary applications. A heated display enables it to withstand cold outdoor environments.

According to Intermec, the CV30 is the first fixed-mount computer to offer a choice of Windows Mobile 5.0 or Windows CE 5.0. The device also includes the company's TE2000 terminal emulation pre-installed, said to facilitate easy integration with legacy applications.

Intermec lists the following key features and specifications for the CV30:

Processor -- PXA270 clocked at 520 MHz
Memory -- 128 MB SDRAM; 128 MB DiskOnChip flash
Display:
- 6.4-inch 640 x 480 TFT LCD
- 140 degree viewing angle, 350 NIT
- heated, replaceable touchscreen
I/O ports:
- 10/100 Ethernet, RJ45
- 2 USB 2.0 hosts on DB15 locking connector
- 2 serial ports, DB9
- Audio -- internal speaker/beeper, 2.5 mm stereo jack
Expansion -- SD card
Wireless:
- 802.11b/g certified for Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX)
- Bluetooth class II -- suitable for wireless barcode scanners
- Antenna options:
  - integrated diversity antenna
  - auto-sense remote patch antenna
  - integrated Bluetooth
Power -- choice of two DC/DC converters:
- 6 to 60 VDC
- 15 to 96 VDC
Dimensions -- 7.45 x 6.95 x 2.15 inches (189 x 177 x 55 mm)
Environmental:
- Operating temperature -- -30 to 50 degrees C (-22 to 122 degrees F)
- Shock and vibration -- exceeds MIL STD 810F
- Dust and water -- sealed to IP66

Intermec calls the CV30 the core of its RFID-enabled "Forklift of the Future concept" intended to turn forklifts into real-time communications hubs capable of "dramatically increasing warehouse efficiency and productivity." It offers two styles of vehicle mounting, as well as a desktop mount for work-in-progress and other stationary applications, and a wall-mount option for time and attendance applications.

The CV30 will be available worldwide beginning September 15. Price was not disclosed.
