| Large digital signage LCDs step up to Windows XP Embedded |
Jul. 25, 2006
Samsung has released a major upgrade to its line of large LCD screens that target corporate and commercial digital signage applications. The 40-inch SyncMaster 400PXn and 46-inch SyncMaster 460PXn now run Windows XP Embedded for extended capabilities and easier remote control over a network, according to the company.

Samsung says the displays require no local PC, since they are directly programmable over a network by means of the company's "MagicNet" software. MagicNet lets users control content across a number of displays from a remote location using a single computer. For example, MagicNet can transmit both media files (photo, audio, and movie files) and document files (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, HTML, and PDF) to displays over an Ethernet LAN using a server/client architecture, according to the company.
Displayable content types include: - Video -- MPEG1, MPEG2, DivX 4.x, DivX 5.x
- Audio -- MP3
- Photo -- JPG, BMP
- Office documents -- Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Acrobat Viewer, HTML Viewer
- HTML, XML, JAVA, Flash

Previous models in the SyncMaster display series, including the 40- and 46-inch 400Pn and 460Pn, used Windows CE 5.0 as their embedded operating system. According to Samsung, the upgrade of the line from Windows CE to Windows XP Embedded enables new features such as full resolution support of 1366 x 768, portrait or landscape orientation, support for "video walls" of up to 4 x 4 displays, and a wider range of media file formats.
Mark Pickard, senior display products marketing manager for Samsung Electronics America, stated, "The combination of Samsung's superb display quality with the innovation of our MagicNet technology, make the 4000PXn and the 460PXn hard to beat for a cutting-edge public display screen. By adding the Windows XP operating system, we have made our displays more powerful, useful and flexible for the end-user."
The displays are currently available through Samsung resellers and distribution partners, according to the company. Pricing was not disclosed.
