IP handset prototype boasts "seamless" WLAN/WAN switching

Net-2Com Corp. and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. have developed a prototype of what they claim is the "world's first wireless IP mobile handset capable of seamless switching between wireless LAN and public wireless networks." The prototype handset, based on an Intel PXA273 processor running Windows CE .NET 4.2, features built-in 802.11b wireless LAN functionality and is said to allow users to select among a range of public wireless networks by inserting various CompactFlash networking cards, thereby enabling global use. With its 2.2-inch QVGA (320x240) color LCD, the device also functions as a PDA supporting a wide range of business applications.

The Net-2Com/Fujitsu announcement points out that the spread of wireless LANs in corporations, homes, and public areas has increased the demand for wireless IP handsets, whereas the use of wireless LANs is limited to hotspots. On the other hand, public wireless networks such as PHS (Personal Handyphone System, a wireless network in Japan) and other cellular phone networks generally have a limited data bandwith but cover wide areas, the announcement continues. And while mobile PCs and PDAs are good for running application software, they lack the compact portability offered by mobile handsets. So, an IP handset that combines support for both wireless LAN and public wireless networks with the open architecture of the PDA is a logical evolutionary step.

Fujitsu says that its Seamlesslink software, a standard feature of the prototype handset, supports automatic switching between wireless LAN and various public wireless networks with no interruption of service. A separate mobile IP server is required for seamless service while switching networks.

The prototype is expected to be commercially available by fall of 2004 through Net-2Com in Japan and China, and in other regions in combination with Net-2Com's currently available IP-Centrex products. In cooperation with Fujitsu Limited, Net-2Com intends to support Fujitsu's Ubiquitous IP Phone System and corporate mobile solution applications, the companies say.
