| Palm unlocks Treo 750, releases Windows Mobile 6 upgrade |

 Palm has released a long-awaited upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 for AT&T customers using its Treo 750 smartphone. At the same time, it has begun selling an unlocked version of the device direct from its website.

The Treo 750 was first launched last year as a Windows Mobile 5 device, the Treo 750v, on the European Vodafone network. It landed Stateside in January courtesy of AT&T, and Palm first announced plans for a Windows Mobile 6 upgrade several months later.
To the frustration of users, however, the downloadable upgrade did not arrive until August, and then only for Vodafone customers in the Netherlands, UK, and Ireland. This week's release corrects that situation, turning the Treo 750 into a Windows Mobile 6 Professional device as well as adding other features.
General enhancements touted by Palm include:- Faster downloads with High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA)
- Update for loss of system sounds
- Improved calendar functionality
- Additional email support, with HTML and the capability to search messages stored on an Exchange server
- Windows Vista compatibility, with Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) syncing
- Better security, with the ability to wipe devices and SD cards clean remotely in case of loss or theft
- Internet Connection Sharing, allowing the phone to operate as a wireless modem for a laptop
- Access to documents stored on SharePoint servers
Some additional enhancements specific to the AT&T network were listed as:- AT&T Cellular Video (CV), providing content including broadcasts from CNN and NBC
- AT&T Music2, offering trial versions of XM Internet radio, and Music ID, where a phone can "listen" to the music and then provide a text message identifying it
Not including these AT&T-specific features, the Treo 750 is now available "out of the box" with the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade already installed. Joining a slowly growing movement, Palm is selling the phone as an unlocked, unsubsidized device directly from its website, priced at approximately $550.
