Rugged tablet computer runs Windows XP Embedded or CE
Jan. 15, 2008

Data Ltd. has announced a rugged tablet PC that runs Windows CE or Windows XP Embedded. The DLI 8300 uses an AMD LX800 processor, and is aimed at applications such as warehousing, transportation, and health care, according to the company.

The device comes in an impact-resistant case made of ABS plastic, said to be able to resist four-foot drops to concrete. It also includes a sealed front bezel, meeting the IP64 standard for liquid and dust resistance. There is even a "protective dome" for the unit's PCMCIA slot, according to the company.

The DLI 8300 has an 8.4-inch touchscreen display, offered in both 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 versions, and claimed readable indoors or out. Data Ltd. says the screen is rated to withstand three million touches in a single location.

As mentioned above, an AMD LX800 processor is used here. Though not specified by Data Ltd., this is probably clocked at 500MHz, using northbridge and southbridge functionality provided by the Geode CS5536 companion chip. The DLI8300 accepts either 512MB or 1GB of memory.

Storage options include a shock-mounted 30GB hard drive, or CompactFlash cards from 1GB to 16GB in capacity. The device also includes two user-accessible PCMCIA slots, which in conjunction with an adapter could be used to add even more flash storage if desired.

Features and specifications listed by Data Ltd for the DLI 8300 include:
  • Processor -- AMD LX800
  • Memory -- 512MB or 1GB
  • Display -- 8.4-inch touchscreen display, outdoor-readable, offered in 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 versions
  • Networking -- 802.11b/g wireless (optional), supporting Cisco CCX3 security extensions
  • Other I/O:
    • 3 x locking USB 2.0 ports
    • 1 x RS-232 (optional)
    • 2.5mm microphone
  • Expansion:
    • 2 x PCMCIA
    • 1 x CompactFlash
  • Operating temperature -- 0 to 122 deg. F (-17 to 50 deg. C)
Data Ltd's data sheet did not specify the device's battery life or power requirements. Dimensions and weight were also not listed, but the DLI 8300 is said to be "truly mobile."

The company lists a bevy of additional hardware options for the DLI 8300, including:
  • PCMCIA cellular card that supports AT&T/Cingular, Sprint, and Verizon
  • 1.3 megapixel camera with autofocus
  • GPS based on the SiRF starIII chipset
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • An integrated 13.56MHz RFID reader, 900MHz Electronic Product Code (EPC) Gen 2 compliant
  • Barcode scanners including Lorax SE955 or SE1524 auto-ranging scanners, or a Hand Held Products 5180 imager
  • Vehicle cradle with port replicator and external GPS antenna
  • 3-bay battery charger
The DLI 8300, which is available now, supports Windows XP Embedded, Windows XP Tablet Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows CE 6.0, and Linux (Debian kernel, GNOME Windows Manager). Pricing was not provided.
