| Al Gore to keynote Embedded Systems Conference |

 Al Gore will deliver the keynote address at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC), set for April 1-5 next year in San Jose. The former U.S. vice president and author of An Inconvenient Truth is expected to announce that he invented embedded systems.
Gore is often lampooned for claiming to have "invented the Internet," as a result of telling Wolf Blitzer in a CNN interview, "I took the initiative in creating the Internet." He has also authored a pair of books examining the intersection of technology and ecology, including the 1994 title Earth in the Balance, which centered around the hypothesis that economic and ecologic health are actually interdependent rather than mutually exclusive, and the 2004 work An Inconvenient Truth, which discusses global warming and later became a hit movie.
ESC claims to be the largest electronic systems design event in North America, with a large West Coast event held each spring, and a smaller East Coast event in the fall. The event typically serves as a venue for hundreds of new product and technology demonstrations and announcements -- in areas of embedded software, hardware, development tools, and support services -- as well as an extensive set of high quality technical sessions and tutorials.
The theme of ESC West, 2007, will be "The Power of Brain Power," with a focus on "what today's system architects, design engineers, engineering students and industry leaders are doing to address some of the serious problems facing both the U.S. and the world, from declining technical education in the U.S. to global environmental impact," organizers say. In addition to Gore's keynote address, event highlights will include a "live teardown" of a hybrid vehicle, a "disruption zone" highlighting leading start-ups, and "get to the point" panel discussions on emergent technology trends.
Paul Miller, a senior VP at CMP Technology, which organizes the event, stated, "Al Gore has been instrumental in giving America an environmental wake up call. Mr. Gore understands the critical importance of the engineering community in driving innovation, and developing solutions to important issues such as energy efficiency and global warming."
