Rugged vehicle computer sports SVGA display, runs Windows CE

Psion Teklogix has introduced a new vehicle-mount computer running Windows CE. The Teklogix 8530 offers the same features as its predecessor, the 8525, but includes a full SVGA display. The device is protected against dust and water and operates down to -22 degrees F, according to the company.

The 8530 is based on a 400 MHz Intel XScale PXA255 processor along with 128 MB of SDRAM and 64 MB of Flash, running Windows CE 4.2. The device's user interface consists of a sunlight-readable 10.4-inch, 800 x 600 touchscreen with a large, on-screen virtual keyboard, according to the company. A separate full keyboard is also available as an option.

Key features and specifications of the 8530 include:

Processor -- 400MHz Intel XScale PXA255
Memory -- 128MB SDRAM; 32MB Flash
Display -- SVGA (800 x 600 pixels), 16-bit transmissive sunlight readable color TFT LCD with CCFL backlight and passive 5-wire touchscreen

- 68-key "PC like" format with 10 function keys, in a choice of three formats:
  - ABC
  - Qwerty
  - Azerty
- Blue/Green EL backlight
- Epoxy coated elastomeric
Internal expansion slots: (accessible through sealed end cap)
- One SDIO/MMC slot
- One Type II CompactFlash
- Two Type II / one Type III PCMCIA slot

- Tether Port with:
  - RS232 serial port (decoded scanner, printer)
  - Undecoded scanner port
  - USB host port
- RS232 serial port
- High density socket with:
  - RS232 serial port
  - One USB device port
  - Two USB host ports
  - Speaker/Mic connection

- 802.11b/g CF card
- Bluetooth SDIO radio (5m range)
- Next Gen narrowband 400-500MHz radio
Operating system -- Windows CE 4.2

Power -- 10-90 VDC; designed for forklift power

The 8530 carries an IP66 rating against dust and water and operates down to -22 degrees F (-30 degrees C). It can also withstand the "substantial" shock and vibration that results from vehicles working in rugged indoor and outdoor applications, Psion says.
