OQO updates pioneering UMPC
Sep. 10, 2007

OQO says it has cut pricing and enhanced the specifications of its pioneering ultra-mobile PC. The Model 02 now boasts faster data rates for its integrated EV-DO wireless WAN capability, a larger hard or solid-state drive, and boost in CPU clock rate to 1.6 GHz.

First given EV-DO capability last February, the Model 02 is the successor to the Model 01, which initially shipped in October of 2004. Still claimed to be the "world's smallest PC running Windows Vista," the Model 02 measures 5.6 x 3.3 x 1.0 inches and weighs "under one pound" with its standard battery. The device boasts a backlit, 58-key "thumb" keyboard with vertical and horizontal capacitive "touchscrollers," along with an optional active digitizer on the 5-inch wide-VGA LCD.

At 1.6 GHz, the clock speed of the device's Via C7M ULV processor has apparently been increased only slightly, but the Model 02 is now said to be available with a 120 GB hard drive (in addition to 40, 60, and 80 GB configurations). In addition, a 32 GB solid state drive (SSD) is also available, which OQO claims speeds boot and application load times by up to 50 percent.

EV-DO Revision A data service -- now available for the device from Sprint as well as Verizon -- is said to double download speeds to 1.4 MBps. OQO also cites improved upstream speed and lower latency.

OQO lists the following key features and specifications for the model 02:
  • Processor -- 1.6 GHz Via C7M ULV; 1.2 GHz optional
  • Chipset -- Via VX700 with integrated GPU (graphics processor unit)
  • Memory -- 1 GB 533 MHz DDR2 SDRAM; 512 MB optional
  • Display:
    • 5-inch WVGA (800 x 480) LCD

    • 120 GB shock-mounted hard drive with drop detect technology; 40, 60, and 80 GB models also available
    • or, 32 GB solid-state drive (SSD)

  • Battery type/life:
    • 4500 mAH standard battery; operates up to three hours
    • 9000 mAH double-capacity battery; operates up to six hours
According to Bob Rosin, OQO's senior VP of marketing and alliances, "OQO created the UMPC and our new products offer performance, wireless and storage options that further advance our vision."

The Model 02 appears to be available through the company's on-line store, with at proces currently ranging between $1299 and $2349, depending on options.
