| Power-efficient thin client runs Windows XP Embedded |

 Devon IT has introduced a new thin client device that runs Windows XP Embedded on a 1GHz Via C7 CPU. The fanless 8050 has accelerated graphics, a smaller form-factor, more processing power, and greater reliability than the model it replaces, according to the company.

Power efficiency is said to be a particular benefit of the 8050, conferred partly by its 1GHz Via C7-M ULV (ultra-low voltage) processor, which Via says draws a maximum of 3.5 Watts. The use of DDR2 RAM also helps save power; the device has 1GB of RAM, along with 1GB of disk-on-module (DOM) storage.
Devon IT does not detail the 8050's video capabilities, other than to cite its VGA output. However, the C7-M ULV is typically paired with Via's CX700M chipset, which integrates northbridge and southbridge functions, and includes Via "Unichrome Pro" graphics. The CX700M's 128-bit, 200MHz 2D and 3D graphics engine features hardware acceleration for MPEG-2 decoding.
In any case, "full multimedia support" is cited for the 8050, which comes with Windows Media Player 11, the Adobe Flash Player, and Internet Explorer 7. Other bundled software includes .NET Framework 3.0, VNC, and Aurora Management Console software. Supported protocols include the Independent Computing Architecture (ICA), Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), Leostream, and Provision Networks technologies. The device can also use terminal emulation to connect to IBM and DEC minicomputers, according to Devon IT.
In addition to VGA, the 8050 has serial and parallel ports plus, of course, a 10/100 Ethernet port for network connection. There are six serial ports (two front, four rear), plus audio line in/out and microphone jacks.

The same basic device -- but with RAM downrated to 256MB, and DOM downsized to 128MB -- will be available as the 6050. Instead of Windows XP Embedded, the 6050 will run DeTOS, Devon IT's thin-client version of Linux. The company said both models would be available at the end of February "with prices starting at $299" but did not provide further details. Linux-based thin clients typically sell for $50-100 less than their XP Embedded-based siblings.
