Bitstream has released a new version of its Pocket PC web browser with support for Windows Mobile 5.0. The latest version of ThunderHawk boasts increased speed, desktop-level support, user-settable page zooming, and seemless connectivity, in addition to compatibility with Windows Mobile 5.0, according to the company.
ThunderHawk is based on a client/server architecture that combines a server infrastructure with a small piece of code that runs on the handheld device. According to the company, the server infrastructure reduces complexity on the handheld device, and also transmits web content in a more compact format to the device, enabling fast and full-featured wireless web browsing.
Claimed features of ThunderHawk Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Edition include: - Increased speed -- ThunderHawk's client/server technology, coupled with Windows Mobile 5.0 3G and WiFi support, provides the fastest browsing experience available on the wireless Web
- Desktop-level Java support -- Java 1.5.0 capabilities lets ThunderHawk users run Java applets that behave on the Windows Mobile 5.0 device just as they do on the desktop, Bitstream claims
- Page zooming -- web page resolution is adjusted according to user preference, for low (480x360), medium (640x480), or high (800x600) resolution viewing with minimal scrolling
- Seamless connectivity -- dropped connections are re-established immediately, along with any data previously entered
Bitstream also offers ThunderHawk in an "Enterprise Edition" that enables organizations with high security standards to host the software in-house by purchasing a fully configured ThunderHawk server, along with client licenses as needed. The server comes preconfigured so there is less of a burden on the enterprise IT department during the installation process, according to the company.
Along with public website access, Bitstream says the Enterprise Edition lets users view applications behind the corporate firewall, including intranet and database information. All upstream data is 128-bit encrypted, and downstream data is 128-bit encrypted on all secure pages.
"Windows Mobile users are very comfortable with wireless technology and therefore will not accept sub-par speed, presentation, and overall performance when it comes to Web browsing," said Bitstream CEO Anna Chagnon. "With ThunderHawk, browsing is fast, easy and seamless on Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PCs."
Another browser company, Opera Software, recently introduced a web browsing technology for mobile devices that splits the browser functionality into a compact client component along with a remote service. Unlike Bitstream's ThunderHawk, however, Opera's Opera Mini is available for free download, and works in conjunction with a free online service provided by Opera. Like ThunderHawk, Opera Mini provides page zooming functions.
