Board-maker releases comprehensive Windows CE 6.0 support

Advantech this week announced the availability of Windows CE 6.0 support for its ruggedized, industrial-grade board- and system-level products. This latest Windows CE software platform adds utilities that enable rapid prototyping and application development, in addition to support for 32,000 simultaneous processes, each with 2 GB of virtual memory space, according to the company.

Enhancements in Windows CE 6.0's new file system include support for larger storage media and file sizes (up to 4 GB), along with removable media encryption, Advantech said. Autosizing memory support for up to 256 MB, customizable boot logo, and a reboot function are also provided.

Improvements to the Windows CE 6.0 kernel architecture, moreover, have "greatly reduced the overhead of system calls between base OS services," Advantech added, "resulting in improved operating system performance."

Among the utilities included within Advantech's Windows CE 6.0 support package are a registry editor and flusher, an auto launcher, a memory adjuster, and a watchdog timer, plus tools for handling CE image information and resolution, Advantech said.

Advantech's Windows CE 6.0 support also includes production-quality device drivers, which "help decrease the amount of modification needed for use with custom hardware," according to an Advantech spokesman, who added that the enhanced driver support of CE 6.0 helps ensure easy portability. The drivers can be run in kernel mode for performance, or in user mode for robustness, he added.

Advantech has also redesigned the SDL-compliant one-tier security model to help ensure that only "trusted applications" can run on an embedded device, the company said.

The pre-configured Windows CE 6.0 English language OS image supports Advantech's extensive lines of ruggedized, industrial-grade boards -- including single-board computers (SBCs), system-on-module products, and Embedded Box computers -- and on systems based upon them, the company said.

Advantech announced plans to provide comprehensive Windows CE 6.0 support for its boards and systems in January.
