Palm rolls out new Windows Mobile Treo

[Updated Sep. 18] -- Palm has released a new Treo smartphone running Windows Mobile. The Treo 700wx, which is nearly identical to the earlier 700w, is available from Sprint alongside the Palm OS-based 700p, and is compatible with Sprint's Power Vision EvDO high-speed data network, according to Palm.

From a hardware standpoint, the 700wx appears to be virtually identical to the Treo 700w. It runs a 312 MHz PXA270 processor with 128 MB of flash (60 MB user accessible), has built-in Bluetooth and a 1.3 Mpixel camera. Expansion is provided by means of an SD/SDIO/MMC card slot, and the rechargeable Li-ion battery is removable.

One interesting hardware feature new to the 700wx is built-in dial-up networking using the USB port. The phone becomes a wireless modem for a laptop, accessing the Sprint EvDO network at broadband speeds up to 700 Kbps. Palm touts this feature as an alternative to WiFi.

PCmag.com has published a review of the Treo 700wx. Interestingly, PCmag claims the 700wx has more memory than the 700w, but our reading of the specs shows them to be identical.
