3G Windows Mobile 6 phone has dual cameras
Mar. 12, 2008

O2 has released a Windows Mobile phone that features dual GSM/GPRS/EDGE and 3G HSDPA/UMTS cellular radios along with dual cameras and a slide-out keyboard. The Xda Atmos also includes WiFi wireless networking, Bluetooth, a 2.4-inch display, and video recording capabilities.

The Atmos includes a forward-facing two megapixel camera intended for photography, as well as a user-facing VGA-resolution camera intended for videoconferencing. The device can record video in QVGA (320 x 240) resolution, according to O2.

The Xda Atmos features GSM/GPRS/EDGE quad-band (850/900/1800/1900MHz) capabilities, along with 2100MHz HSDPA/UMTS. O2 says the phone can operate worldwide, downloading data at up to 3.6Mbps on suitable networks.

The device also integrates 802.11b/g WiFi, as well as Bluetooth 2.0. It can stream music in stereo to a compatible Bluetooth headset.

The Xda Atmos has not only a five-way navigation pad, but also a slide-out QWERTY keyboard with 31 keys (shown above). When the keyboard is slid out, the phone's 2.4-inch, 320 x 240 display switches into landscape mode automatically.

Under the hood, the Xda Atmos is based on a 400MHz Qualcomm MSM7200 processor, along with 64MB of RAM and 256MB of flash. Storage can be expanded via a microSD slot.

The Xda Atmos runs Windows Mobile 6 Standard, which features email, web browsing, and Office document viewing capabilities. O2 provided no details of any proprietary software additions.

Specifications listed by O2 for the Xda Atmos include the following:
  • Processor -- Qualcomm MSM7200 clocked at 400MHz
  • Memory -- 64MB of RAM and 256MB of flash
  • Display -- 2.4-inch display with 320 x 240 resolution
  • Cameras:
    • 2 megapixel camera
    • VGA-resolution camera for videoconferencing
  • Wireless:
    • WAN:
      • HSDPA/UMTS (2100MHz)
      • GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz)
    • LAN: 802.11b/g
    • PAN: Bluetooth 2.0 with stereo audio capabilities
  • Other I/O -- ExtUSB (11-pin mini-USB and audio jack in one)
  • Expansion -- microSD memory card (SD 2.0 compatible)
  • Battery type -- 1,050 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery
  • Battery life:
    • Talk time -- up to five hours
    • Standby -- up to 290 hours
  • Dimensions -- 4.2 x 2 x 0.7 inches (106 x 51 x 19mm)
  • Weight with battery -- 5.3 ounces (150g)
If the "new" Xda Atmos seems somewhat familiar, that's a commentary on the globalization of the cellphone market, where carriers can no longer afford to hesitate before offering the latest devices. Differing only in color, the Xda Atmos is apparently a version of the S730 introduced in January by HTC, and subsequently released in Japan by Softbank as the X03HT.

Availability

The Xda Atmos is available now to business customers of O2 UK. Pricing varies according to the calling plan chosen.
