Samsung adds Windows Vista-equipped UMPC

Samsung has added a Windows Vista-based model to its UMPC (ultra-mobile PC) tablet family. The "Q1P for Windows Vista" UMPC has achieved Windows Vista certification, and boasts a 1GHz Intel Pentium M ULV processor, 60GB hard drive, WiFi and Bluetooth wireless, and a 7-inch wide-VGA touchscreen, according to the company.

Samsung reports that it created a task force to ensure that its products -- including the Q1P UMPC -- would be certified for operation with Microsoft's new Windows Vista OS.

Like Samsung's other UMPC family members, this Windows Vista-based model boasts a "brilliant" 7-inch wide LCD touchscreen. It also includes a feature that lets users enter handwritten notes directly on the touchscreen -- for storage either as digitized handwriting, or for conversion into standard digital text.

Another interesting feature of all of Samsung's Q1P UMPC models is "AVS Now," a "pre-boot" capability said to enable the device to be used as a multimedia player. This lets users enjoy multimedia files stored on the device -- including videos, movies, music, and still photos -- without having to boot the device into its Windows OS, Samsung says.

Mika Krammer, director of Microsoft's Windows Client Mobility group, stated, "This new addition to the UMPC category combines the power of Windows Vista with a lightweight, carry-everywhere hardware design that enables users to easily maintain their digital lifestyle."

The Q1P for Windows Vista will be immediately this quarter from various computer reseller Web and retail storefronts, priced around $1,300, according to Samsung.
