Orange releases Windows Mobile 5 smartphone and PDA

[Updated Nov. 4] -- Orange SA has added a pair of wireless devices running Windows Mobile 5.0 to its Signature family of business-oriented mobile devices. The SPV C600 smartphone and the SPV M3000 wireless PDA both support high speed data via cellular EDGE technology, according to the company.

Orange says the quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) SPV C600 is the successor to its popular SPV C500, although it appears to have more in common with the SPV C550 introduced last summer. It features a QVGA (320 x 240) screen and a 1.3 Mpixel camera. It includes an MP3 and WAV music player, as well as Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, according to Orange. Connectivity ports include USB, IrDA, and Bluetooth.

The SPV M3000 wireless PDA, rumored to be based on the Wizard platform from Taiwan ODM (original design manufacturer) HTC, follows in the footsteps of the M5000, based on HTC's Universal platform. The M3000 features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, instead of the clamshell design of the M5000. The device's QVGA touchscreen display automatically switches from landscape to portrait mode depending on its orientation, according to Orange. It incorporates 128 MB of RAM, WiFi connectivity, and a 1.3 Mpixel camera and camcorder.

The SPV C600 is launching "across all Orange territories," while the SPV M3000 will initially be limited to France, Poland, Netherlands, Slovakia, and Romania. The C600 will be priced at under 250 Euros and the M3000 at under 350 Euros. Pricing will vary across territories according to local market conditions and contract value, the company said.
