Intel double-duties Smartphone development kits

[Update]Developers looking to implement the landmark Intel-Microsoft Smartphone reference design released at this week's 3GSM conference can now get development kits directly from Intel.

A couple of somewhat overlapping technology options appear to be floating around.

First off, Intel is offering a Wireless Development Kit (DVK) for phones based on the new PXA800F single-chip cellular processor.

The PXA800F(code-named "Manitoba") is billed by Intel as a "wireless-Internet-on-a-chip." It combines an Xscale processor, on-chip flash, and a digital signal processor jointly developed by Intel and Analog Devices.

Separately, Intel says it has a Smartphone reference design based on the PXA262 processor. (The PXA262, which is preceded the 800F, is the IC at the heart of the joint Intel-Microsoft Smartphone reference design touted earlier this week.

That reference design is a huge step forward for the Smartphone platform. Until now, Smartphone has been perceived as playing catch up to media-capable cell phones running on the Symbian platform. However, if the Smartphone reference design is snapped up as a go-to-market platform, it could change that equation.

However, it's too soon to assess the market dynamics of the new reference platform. Currently, one vendor--a little-known Taiwanese manufacturer called Wistron Corp.--has publicly pledged to start making phones based on the PXA262 reference design beginning later this year.

Other developers interested in moving ahead with the platform can get the 262 reference design from Intel, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the company.

Developers interested in the 800F can use Intel's Wireless DVK as a starting point.

Intel says the DVK "implements a full-featured handset and provides a software/hardware development environment for rapid time-to-market."

The kit includes a PXA800F cellular processor, third-part mixed-signal analog baseband IC, direct-conversion radio transceiver, power management chip, keypad, LCD, and debug interfaces.

Also shipped in the DVK is mobile handset reference software and Windows-based development, calibration, and test tools. The software development environment includes a C++ compiler optimized for the XScale core used in the PXA800.

According to Intel, "The reference software resides entirely in on-chip flash. It implements the physical layer and protocol layers 1, 2, and 3 required for full phase 2+ GSM/GPRS Class 12 functionality."
