Service remotely syncs Outlook data without Exchange

Netherlands-based XOffice has launched a service that enables wireless synchronization of email and PIM data between a user's PC or laptop and their mobile phone or PDA. The subscription-based Syncxo service is compatible with Windows Mobile, and works with most mobile devices that support OMA (Open Mobile Alliance) standards, according to the company.

Users are required to install XOffice's "Syncxo Outlook Connector" on their laptop or desktop computer. The connector periodically uploads email and PIM data to XOffice's remote servers, via Internet, WiFi, or UMTS network connections.

Data that has been transferred to XOffice's remote servers is then wirelessly synchronized with the user's mobile device, via GPRS, UMTS, or WiFi network connections. Once synchronization has occurred, users can read, edit, add and delete information from their device. Data modifications made on the mobile device are reflected back to the originating PC or laptop -- that is, the synchronization function is bidirectional.

Another feature of the Syncxo service is that users can read, edit, and add to their synchronized PIM data that resides on XOffice's remote servers over the Internet, using a web browser on any convenient computing device. The data on both the user's desktop PC or laptop and mobile device will then be synchronized with the modified data. Hence, once synchronized, the user's data is available from anywhere.

The company also notes that the presence of the user's data on its remote servers additionally provides an automatic backup service.

XOffice says it has built a number of security measures into its Syncxo service, including data encryption, redundancy, anti-spam and anti-virus functions, and firewall protection of the remote servers.

The Syncxo service is currently offered three ways: Syncxo Free, for calendar synchronization only; Syncxo Basic, includes calendar and contacts, for 3 Euros per month; Syncxo Premium, includes calendar, contacts, tasks, and email, for 11.90 Euros per month.

Use of the Syncxo service is mobile operator-independent, according to XOffice. All that is required is the availability of data services on the mobile device, plus a monthly subscription to the Syncxo service. The company claims that Syncxo is currently compatible with some 350 devices.
