| New HP iPAQ Pocket PCs boast secure access |

 Hewlett-Packard has introduced a new line of iPAQ Pocket PCs running Windows Mobile 2003 SE on Intel PXA270 processors. The three new PDAs boast full-color QVGA displays usable in both portrait and landscape modes, Bluetooth wireless, CompactFlash and SD card expansion, and security enhancements including a fingerprint sensor in the high-end model.

A key feature of all three new PDAs is "HP ProtectTools," secured by Credant Technologies's "Mobile Guardian" client security software. HP ProtectTools enables users to support their company's security policies, including strong authentication, according to HP. As an added level of security, the hx2700 incorporates a biometric fingerprint reader made by Atmel. Using biometric software from Cogent Systems, users may authenticate themselves with either a fingerprint alone, or via a combination of a PIN or password plus fingerprint recognition.
All three units feature 3.5-inch, QVGA resolution (320x240), 64K-color, transflective TFT LCD displays that are switchable between portrait and landscape mode. For memory and I/O expansion, the devices all include two types of expansion slot -- a Type II CompactFlash slot, and a Secure Digital slot. They also all include integrated Bluetooth wireless and serial IR connectivity, while the two higher-end models add 802.11b Wi-Fi. Dimensions for all three are 4.7 x 3.0 x .65 inches.

Application software includes: Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Voice Recorder, Notes, and "Pocket" versions of Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer, and Windows Media Player 9. Additionally, the devices include the following HP-unique apps: ProtectTools, Image Zone, Mobile Printing, and iPAQ Backup.
Suggested list prices for the three new HP iPAQ Pocket PCs are $349, $449, and $649, respectively, for the hx2100, hx2400, hx2700. The entry-level hx2100 is available now, while the higher-end hx2400 and hx2700 are due for release in December.
