| Summit chats up smartphones |
Sep. 26, 2007
An annual conference devoted to smartphones of every type, including Windows Mobile devices, is set for Oct. 22 in San Francisco. The Smartphone Summit is co-located with the CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2007 show, Oct. 23-25, but requires separate registration.
The Smartphone Summit will feature a keynote address on "The Emerging Smartphone Lifestyle -- A Global Perspective," by Symbian co-founder and EVP of research David Wood. An eloquent advocate of smartphones, Wood will be joined for product demonstrations by Jorgen Behrens, the company's executive VP of marketing.
Another smartphone enthusiast to speak will be Microsoft's Gerardo Dada, who works in Windows Mobile marketing and maintains his own blog reviewing a variety of devices. Dada will be part of an 8:45 AM panel discussion on "Enabling Your Business with Smartphone & Wireless -- First Steps and Challenges," in which he'll be joined by others including Tony Rizzo, research director for mobile technology at the 451 Group, and Matthew Bancroft, CMO of mobile device management vendor Mformation.
In an enterprise-focused session at 11:00 AM, it's promised that top executives from the enterprise solutions divisions of major device manufacturers will present their latest smartphone-based solutions. Scheduled speakers include Joe Tate, VP of the business handhelds unit at HP, and John Wang, CMO of prominent Windows Mobile handset-maker HTC.
In all, the Summit will include an analyst roundtable, plus about 15 sessions on topics such as security, mobile commerce, push email, GPS and location-based solutions, social networking, and entertainment.
In addition to the above one-day program of talks and sessions on Oct. 11, the Smartphone Summit will sponsor an Enterprise Mobility Pavilion on the main CTIA Wireless I.T. show floor. The pavilion will showcase mobile and wireless hardware, software, and accessories, and will be staffed by representatives of manufacturers, carriers, and service providers.
CITA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2007
The Smartphone Summit is just one facet of the CTIA Wireless & Entertainment 2007 show -- itself a spinoff of the annual CTIA Wireless event. According to the organizers, this will showcase "trends in bandwidth development from WiFi to WiMAX, accessibility from GPS to LBS, and mobile data and communications."
Pavillions showcasing vendors in the wireless enterprise space will include those devoted to:- Enterprise Mobility, with a focus on smartphone technologies
- Developer's Pavilion, with a focus on new wireless data and voice applications
- M2M, focusing on wireless machine-to-machine services
Other events-within-an-event are promised to include the Andy Seybold University School of Wireless Mobility (Oct. 22), the Navteq Connections conference devoted to convergence and advancement of location-enabled applications (Oct. 22), and the Fourth Generation Mobile Forum (Oct. 24)
