Managed code database runs on Windows Mobile

Vista Software has released a new version of its .NET database software that runs on a wide range of platforms, including Windows Mobile devices. VistaDB 3.0 is specifically aimed at next generation, managed, and typesafe development platforms such as .NET, .NET Compact Framework, and Mono, according to the company.

Vista says that VistaDB 3.0, of which a preview version was released last summer, features a small 600KB footprint and a "100 percent managed and verfiably typesafe architecture" developed in C#. It also boasts SQL Server 2005 compatible data types, and supports T-SQL syntax. Another key attribute of VistaDB, according to the company, is its royalty-free license.

Because VistaDB is verfiably typesafe, applications based on it can run on any CLR-compliant (Common Language Runtime) framework, including .NET, .NET Compact Framework, and Mono, according to Vista. Mono is an open-source project sponsored by Novell that provides the necessary software to develop and run .NET client and server applications -- unchanged -- on Linux, Unix (including OS X and Solaris), Windows, and Windows Mobile, the company claims.

VistaDB's embedded architecture makes it easy to use and eliminates administration hassles found in other database products, the company adds. SQL Server 2005-compatible data types and T-SQL syntax support lets developers re-use existing source code and SQL statements designed for SQL Server 2005.

VistaDB 3.0 includes a 600KB fully-managed assembly for Compact Framework 2.0 that runs on both the PocketPC and Smartphone editions of Windows Mobile 5.0, according to Vista.

New licenses of VistaDB 3.0 are available for about $300 for a single user, and $1000 for five users. A 30-day free trial is available here. Upgrades from v2.x are also offered.
