ARM9-based SBC gains Windows CE 6.0 BSP

Custom design house Adeneo will supply a Windows CE 6.0 BSP (board-support package) for a small SBC (single-board computer) from Phytec, the companies announced at the Embedded Systems Conference this week. Phytec's phyCORE LPC3180 SBC is based on the 32-bit, ARM9-based LCP3180 microcontroller from NXP Semiconductors.

The phyCORE LPC3180 SBC, measuring 2.4 x 2.1 inches (60 x 53 mm), integrates a low-power, 32-bit NXP LCP3180 ARM926EJ-S processor clocked at 208 MHz, plus 16 to 64 MB of SDRAM and 16 to 128 MB of flash memory. Other key features and specifications of the LPC3180 SBC are said to include:
  • Processor and board-level signals extend to two high-density connectors on underside of the SBC
  • JTAG signals are available on the board's edge connector
  • Supports industrial temperature range, -40 to +85 degrees Celsius
Phytec notes that, in addition to the ARM926EJ-S processor core, the NXP LPC3180 integrates a memory-management unit (MMU), a vector floating-point coprocessor, a real-time clock, a USB Host/Device interface, dual SPI, dual I2C, dual PWM, three 10-bit analog-to-digital channels, and seven UARTs.

According to Thomas Walker, Director of Phytec America, the availability of the Windows CE BSP "significantly reduces our end users' development time and design risk... [and] allows them to focus on the application-specific I/O and software issues of a development rather than the task of designing and validating complicated circuitry around a complex Windows Embedded CE-capable processor."

Adeneo CEO Yannick Chamming stated that the BSP's compliance with Microsoft's PQOAL (Production-Quality OEM Adaptation Layer) and PQD (Production Quality Device) specifications provides "the most cost-effective way to develop custom solutions on NXP Chips under Windows Embedded CE with the minimal redesign. Only the portions of the BSPs handling board features," he explained, "need to be reviewed and redesigned, and all code linked to the core CPU can be reused without modifications."

Adeneo's Windows Embedded CE BSP for Phytec's phyCORE LPC3180 SBC will be available in Q3 2007, the companies said. They LPC3180 SBC is currently in production, priced at about $180 each in OEM quantities of 1,000.
