"Semi-rugged" tablet runs ULV Core 2 Duo
Sep. 03, 2008

Motion Computing introduced a "semi-rugged" tablet PC using Intel's Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) Core 2 Duo U7500. The LE1700 includes a 12.1-inch touchscreen, 2GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive or 64GB SSD (solid state drive), 802.11a/b/g wireless, dual batteries, and optional cellular modem, says Motion.

The LE1700's semi-rugged design makes the device widely applicable for use by inspectors, sales representatives, appraisers, and home health professionals, says Motion Computing. The company touts both the device's shock-mounted display, and its 80GB, 1.8-inch hard disk drive, claimed to offer "twice the shock protection of the industry standard 2.5-inch drive."

The LE1700 is offered with this optional "bump case"

A built-in accelerometer senses drops or other events that could potentially damage the hard disk drive and shuts it down, according to the company. But, for purchasers who want "extreme shock and vibration protection," a 64GB SSD is also available. In addition, Motion Computing offers the "bump case" pictured above, said to provide the unit with additional protection.

The LE1700 has a 12.1-inch touchscreen display that is available in both a standard version and a "View Anywhere" version that's capable of both indoor and outdoor use. Both screen types are offered in either XGA (1024 x 768 pixels) or SXGA+ (1400 x 1050 pixels) resolutions, says Motion.

A removable keyboard snaps onto the bottom of the LE1700

Running either Windows Vista Business -- or, via a "downgrade" offered until January 2009, Windows XP -- the LE1700 is designed to be operated via its digitizer pen, which comes with a button for right-clicking and an integrated "eraser." Buttons on the tablet itself include a five-way navigational control, four function keys, a reset button, and a wireless on/off button. In addition, an optional "convertible keyboard," pictured above, is said to snap onto the device without use of cables.

In addition to internal stereo speakers, the LE1700 incorporates an interesting "Speak Anywhere" technology. Three built-in microphones are automatically switched to provide proper pickup of stereo sound, whether the tablet is being operated in portrait or landscape modes.

Meanwhile, the LE1700's "warm swappable" standard battery is claimed to provide "several hours" of power. An optional eight-cell, 2730mAh extended battery snaps onto the bottom of the device. In return for adding 1/4-inch of thickness and about a pound of weight, it provides about 3.5 additional hours of operation, according to the company.

As mentioned earlier, the LE1700 comes with Intel's ULV Core 2 Duo U7500 processor, clocked at 1.0GHz. A 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo L7400 can also be ordered, but uses about ten percent more battery power, says Motion.

The device's wireless capabilities include 802.11a/b/g wireless, Bluetooth, and an optional integrated Novatel cellular modem, said to provide downloads of up to 1.4MBps on EV-DO Rev. A networks. The tablet also has a gigabit Ethernet connector.

Expansion potential is provided by both an SD slot and a Type I/II PC Card slot. The LE1700 has two USB ports, an IrDA port, both DVI and VGA video outputs, and a connector for an optional docking station.

Finally, the LE1700 also has a fingerprint reader, plus a Trusted Platform Module, for secure storage of encryption keys and other information. It is optionally available with Absolute Software's ComputraceComplete tracking software, according to Motion.
