 Paris-based Bookeen has launched what it calls the world's "first multi-format open e-book reading device." The Cybook, which is based on a Windows CE embedded software platform, is offered in English and French versions, and provides an "optimally immersive e-reading experience," according to Bookeen.
The Cybook is built in a compact form-factor and includes a 10-inch, 800 x 600 pixel, color LCD touch-screen that supports both landscape and portrait modes. A large-print customization feature can help some vision-impaired people to read again, Bookeen says.
The Cybook supports common e-book formats that include PRC, PDB, HTML, RTF, and TXT. It comes with several bundled e-book readers, including Mobipocket Reader, uBook Reader, Boo Reader, and Boo Reader Vision. Additional programs bundled with the device include Internet Explorer, Pocket Inbox email reader, DOC and XLS file editors, and an audio player.
Booken says the reader supports a wealth of freely available texts in the public domain, and about 20,000 copyrighted titles, including bestsellers like "The Da Vinci Code," by Dan Brown, and Stephen King's "The Dark Tower."
