Samsung i600 smartphone hits US market
Nov. 10, 2003

Verizon Wireless announced the exclusive availability in the U.S. today of Samsung's SCH-i600 Smartphone -- the first Samsung mobile phone based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile software, and the second Windows Mobile based smartphone to arrive in the U.S. The i600 is a clamshell-style device with a bright, full-color display that combines cell phone and PDA features.

Last month, AT&T Wireless announced U.S availability of the Motorola MPx200, the first Windows Mobile based smartphone to become available in the North American market.

The i600 is powered by a 200MHz PXA250 XScale processor, and an SDIO expansion slot enables memory and other expansion. Other key features of the i600, according to Samsung, include an external screen for caller ID, a speakerphone for easy hands-free communication, and voice recognition capabilities including voice-activated phone book, digit dial, and menu commands.

"First and foremost, the i600 is a great wireless device," said Pieter Knook, senior vice president of mobile and embedded devices at Microsoft Corp.
