New release of handwriting recognition software

PhatWare has released a major update to its handwriting recognition software for devices running Microsoft's Windows Mobile software platform. The latest version of CalliGrapher includes a configuration manager that allows users to create multiple configurations, as well as a customizable on-screen 24-button keyboard -- all while taking up less memory than previous releases, the company says.

According to PhatWare, CalliGrapher uses fuzzy logic and neural net techniques to recognize any handwriting style -- cursive, print, or mixed -- written in any application window, and then converts the characters into digital text for use in the target application.

CalliGrapher 7, the first major upgrade of the product in two years, includes:

New Configuration Manager for multiple configurations. Customizable to user needs, multiple configurations enable users to easily switch between different spell checker dictionaries, recognition engines, or custom keyboard layouts.
Customizable, 24-button Soft Keyboard, accessible by pen or toolbar button, that helps users quickly find and input select characters not identifiable through automatic recognition.
New Customizable Toolbar that lets users gain quick access to their most commonly used commands.
Improved Correction Window for easier recognition corrections.
Full On-Screen Keyboard with 10 pre-defined layouts for eight Western European languages.
40-Color Ink Palette
Improved Ink Speed and Recognition Quality

PhatWare says that in addition to CalliGrapher's other features, the software also offers PenCommander, an easy-to-use PC navigation tool, as well as language pack offerings for Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese/Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish. CalliGrapher 7 supports Microsoft Windows Mobile 2000/2002/2003 software for Pocket PCs, and is priced at $29.95 ($19.95 upgrade).
