| Panel PC doubles up on gigabit, Firewire |
Aug. 06, 2008
Axiomtek has announced a 17-inch panel PC that runs Windows, targeting kiosks and factory automation. The Panel1178-841 accepts Intel Core 2 Duo processors, offers a DVI-I output plus two Firewire ports, has dual gigabit Ethernet interfaces, and supports dual hard drives or Compact Flash, says Axiomtek.

Axiomtek's SBC86841 (Click image to enlarge) | Like many other products from Axiomtek, the Panel1178-841 finesses one of the company's existing Mini-ITX main boards. In this case, it's the SBC86841, pictured at right. This board is described as offering Intel's "Socket T" LGA775, which accepts various Core 2 Duo and Core Solo processors, with frontside buses from 533MHz to 1066MHz. An interesting aside about the LGA (land grid array connector): the 775 connecting pins it requires now reside on the main board, not the CPU, apparently lessening any chance of bending.
The SBC86841 uses Intel's Q965 northbridge and ICH8 southbridge, and it accepts up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM via two 240-pin DIMM slots, says Axiomtek. Also cited separately for the main board is a PCI Express x 4 slot that can accept three PCI Express x 1 expansion cards via a riser arrangement, plus a PCI Express Mini Card slot.
Axiomtek doesn't tout this PCI Express expansion for the built-up Panel1178-841, perhaps because the device's "slim" 5.9-inch depth doesn't leave room for it. However, the company does offer an optional wireless LAN module for the panel PC, and this may well connect via the main board's PCI Express interface.
Be that as it may, the overall Panel1178-841 sports a 17-inch touchscreen display with 1280 x 1024 resolution and a 260-nit brightness rating. The front bezel is said to meet the IP65 standard for resistance to dust and liquids.
The Panel1178-841 includes a DVI-I video output and two Firewire ports The Panel1178-841 of course depends on the underlying SBC86841 for all its interfaces, which can be seen in the above photo. They include three serial ports, a DVI-I video output, two gigabit Ethernet ports, dual PS/2 connectors, and two Firewire (IEEE 1394a) ports. The device also offers four USB ports, audio in/out, and an internal speaker.
Finally, the Panel1178-841 includes a SATA connector. According to Axiomtek, the device has room for either a single 3.5-inch hard disk drive, or two laptop-style 2.5-inch drives. For those who prefer solid state storage, a Compact Flash slot is also available.
