Scanning handheld has PDA-like form factor

Wasp Barcode Technologies has introduced a "PDA-sized" portable data terminal with an integral laser scanner. The WPA1200, said to be ideal for asset or inventory tracking applications, is available with either Windows CE 5.0 or Windows Mobile 5.0, according to the company.

Indeed resembling a PDA -- though featuring 18 dedicated keys -- the WPA1200 has a QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) display. Its CPU is a Marvell PXA270 clocked at 520MHz, and memory amounts to 64MB of RAM and 128MB of flash.

The device includes Bluetooth plus an SDIO slot which, the company notes, can be used to add a wireless LAN card or extra memory. A PCMICA Type II slot is also featured.

Wasp says the WPA1200 is rated to the IP64 standard, which means it is dust-tight and sealed against splashing water. It can also withstand 4-foot drops to concrete, according to the company.

The limited specifications released by Wasp for the WPA1200 are:

Processor -- Marvell PXA270 clocked at 520MHz
Memory -- 64MB of RAM and 128MB of flash
Keys -- 18 dedicated keys
Networking:
- Bluetooth
- 802.11b/g wireless (optional, via SDIO slot)
Other I/O -- laser barcode scanner, supporting all popular 1D (linear) barcodes
Expansion:
- SDIO slot
- PCMCIA Type II slot

The company does not detail whether its versions of Windows CE 5.0 and Windows Mobile 5.0 include the normally bundled applications, such as Internet Explorer. This seems likely, however, since the device is also said to allow installation of third-party applications, and additional customization via Microsoft's Visual Studio.

The WPA1200 is available bundled with Wasp's MobileAsset software, which the company says is intended for small- and medium-sized businesses. It stores the transaction history of an asset, such as where it has been, how many times it has been broken or serviced, and who was the last person to check it out and for how long.

Available now, the device is sold for approximately $1,500 with Windows CE, as the WPA1200CE. The WPA1200WM is the Windows Mobile version, priced at approximately $1,750. Finally, the WPA1200CE is available bundled with MobileAsset for approximately $2,000.
