Handheld GPS runs Windows Mobile, includes US metro maps

Pharos Science & Applications has added a new model to its line of Windows Mobile GPS handheld navigation devices. The "all-in-one" Pharos Traveler GPS 505 comes preloaded with map data for top US 50 metropolitan areas, according to the comapny.

The GPS 505 is based on a 416 MHz PXA270 processor with 64 MB of SDRAM and 64 MB of Flash. It includes an SD slot with SDIO Now! support, USB 1.1, IrDA, and AC97 audio with a stereo headphone jack. The unit comes with a 512 MB SD card preloaded with maps of the top 50 US metropolitan areas.

As would be expected of a sophisticated, Windows Mobile-powered GPS handheld, the device provides both visual and voice-prompted, turn-by-turn driving directions. Users can program destinations by street address, intersection, or from the "large" Points of Interest (POI) library, according to Pharos. A destination can also be selected from a Pocket Outlook address book entry.

The device provides four navigation screens: text and graphical map; text directions; full screen text guidance; and a GPS compass screen.

Pharos claims the GPS 505's built-in SiRFstarIII GPS chipset results in fast "Time-to-First-Fix" along with reliable operation in indoors and in urban areas. It has a built-in patch antenna and a connector for an external antenna.

Pharos says the GPS 505's built-in software incorporates a Traffic Message Channel (TMC) driver in anticipation of TMC services becoming available in the US. The Traffic Message Channel is an application for the FM Radio Data System (RDS) used for broadcasting real-time traffic and weather information, according to the TMC Forum. TMC services are available over much of western Europe and are planned for North America.

The GPS 505 is available through selected dealers or on-line from Mobile Planet, at a suggested list price of $650.
