Rugged vehicle-mount computer is "voice ready"

LXE has added a new model to its line of rugged, half-VGA, vehicle-mount computers that target smaller warehouse vehicles with limited space for mounting a computer. The VX3X runs Windows CE, and is said to be "voice ready" via the company's Tough Talk voice recognition technology.

The VX3X appears to be an upgrade of the MX3 and MX3-RFID, both introduced in 2004. The new unit upgrades the SA-1110 processor of earlier models to a 400 MHz PXA255, and increases maximum memory capacity to 128 MB each of SDRAM and flash. The unit's 6-inch high brightness display incorporates a resistive touchscreen with anti-glare coating and tethered stylus, according to LXE.

The company lists the following key features and specifications for the VX3X:

- 64 or 128 MB SDRAM

- 6-inch, 240 x 640
- double CCFL backlight
- fully adjustable contrast and brightness
Keyboard:
- 63-key QWERTY format with numeric keypad, two large user mappable program keys, and large enter key
- 10 single-touch function keys
- all 63 keys are user mappable
- phosphorescent "glowing" keys
I/O ports:
- USB client port on 9-pin D connector
- RS-232 on 9-pin D connector with configurable power for external devices
- audio:
  - 2.5mm audio/microphone jack
  - beeper with adjustable volume control
Expansion:
- PCMCIA V2.1 slot Type I, II, III
- Compact Flash Slot Type I or II
Wireless -- 802.11b/g WiFi
Power -- 12 to 80 VDC internal fully isolated power supply with industrial power cable for vehicle attachment
Dimensions -- 9 x 6 x 2 inches (228 x 152 x 51 mm)

LXE describes its ToughTalk voice recognition technology as a specialized combination of ruggedized system design, advanced audio circuitry and noise-canceling techniques that allow the VX3X to support industrial-grade voice recognition applications. The company offers VoxBrowser for developing voice-enabled logistics applications.

The company did not offer any details on price or availability of the VX3X.
