 Lanner Electronics announced two devices using Intel's EP80579 SoC (system on chip) and Windows XP Embedded. The FW-7570 is a 1U security appliance with encryption capabilities and up to 10 gigabit Ethernet ports, while the NS04-5130 is a four-bay storage platform with 4TB capacity, says Lanner.

Intel's EP80579 is an SoC that integrates typical northbridge and southbridge functions with a Pentium M core clocked up to 1.2GHz. It includes a memory controller hub (MCH) supporting DDR2 RAM up to 800MHz, and there's an optional "QuickAssist" FPGA interface. See our earlier coverage, here, for more details.
FW-7570 Security Appliance
Lanner's FW-7570 (below) is touted as a "high-performance compact network appliance for security and network communication applications." The 1U device is available in configurations with six, eight, or 10 gigabit Ethernet ports, up to five of which offer bypass functionality in case of power failure.
According to the company, the FW-7570 can act as a gateway, firewall, and load balancer. It also is said to perform bulk encryption, hashing, and public/private key generation.

Running Windows XP Embedded directly on the EP80579 SoC, the FW-7570 is available with 600MHz, 1GHz, or 1.2GHz clock speeds. It comes with a single SODIMM slot that accepts up to 2GB of 800/667/533MHz memory. Also included are two SATA ports and hard drive bays that accept either dual 2.5-inch drives or a single 3.5-inch drive.
Expansion potential is provided by a Type II CompactFlash slot and a Mini PCI slot. There's also a PCI Express x 4 slot, but this is normally occupied by a module that supplements the FW-7570's six motherboard-based Ethernet ports with two or four additional network interfaces.
Finally, the FW-7570 includes an RJ45 port for connecting a console, plus two USB 2.0 ports. In addition to running Windows XP Embedded, it can also be purchased with Linux 2.6, says Lanner.

NS04-5130
Lanner's NS04-5130 (below) is a compact network storage appliance with four bays for 3.5-inch drives, said to accept up to 4TB in all. Like the FW-7570 covered above, the NS04-5130 runs Windows XP Embedded on Intel's EP80579 SoC, again offered in 600MHz, 1GHz, or 1.2GHz variants. Dual 240-pin DIMM sockets accept a total of 4GB of 800/667/533/400MHz DDR2 memory.

The device features dual 3.0Gb/sec SATA II interfaces, and it supports RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 configurations. Hot-swapping drives is possible, if necessary, says Lanner.
Sporting three gigabit Ethernet ports, the box also has an RJ45 port for a console interface, and two USB ports. Internally, there are pin headers that would allow attaching a full VGA display plus a keyboard and mouse, according to the company.
Finally, the NS04-5130 includes a watchdog timer and an internal, battery-backed real-time clock. In addition to running Windows XP Embedded, it is offered in versions using Red Hat Linux 5 or FreeBSD 6.2, according to Lanner.

Further information
Lanner did not release pricing or availability information for the FW-7570 or NS04-5130. However, the two devices are said to be on display at the Intel Developer Forum this week, in booths 148 and 458 of San Francisco's Moscone Center.
