 Janam has started shipping a rugged handheld computer based on Windows CE 5.0. Powered by a Freescale iMX.21 processor and sporting a 3-inch QVGA touchscreen, the "XM60" features Bluetooth and optional 802.11b wireless networking, a backlit numeric keypad, and a scanner supporting 1D and 2D barcodes.

The XM60 has a mild-mannered appearance compared with some other ruggedized handhelds, but nonetheless withstands multiple four-foot drops onto concrete, Janam claims. The device also operates over a temperature range from 15 to 122 deg. F (-10 to 50 deg. C), and is sealed to resist water and dust intrusion to IP54 standard, according to the company.
The device is based on a 266MHz i.MX21 processor from Freescale. It has 64MB of RAM, 64MB of flash, and a miniSD slot that Janam says accepts up to 2GB of memory (i.e., it is SD-compatible but does not comply with the newer SDHC specification). The device's 3-inch QVGA (320 x 240) display has a touchscreen designed for stylus input.
Other physical characteristics include a numeric keypad, directional pad and enter key, three different buttons that can trigger scans, and tri-color LEDs that provide feedback on scanning progress. The device also includes Bluetooth 1.2 and, optionally, 802.11b wireless networking.
The XM60 has a 720 x 480 pixel CMOS area imager and incorporates Hand Held Products' Adaptus imaging technology. The hardware accommodates both 1D and 2D scanning, but the company offers an entry-level version of the device where only 1D scanning is enabled. Purchasers of this can upgrade it later in the field by purchasing a 2D firmware upgrade, Janam says.
Other options include extra batteries, cables, RFID and magnetic stripe readers, and single- or four-station battery chargers. The CK-XP-1S cradle provides charging as well as USB and serial ports, while the CK-XP-1M cradle provides charging/modem capabilities.

Availability
The XM60 is available now, according to Jaman, which says prospective customers should "call for details" to ascertain overall pricing. The firmware upgrade for enabling the base model's 2D scanning capabilities is listed at $200.
