Industrial PC bristles with serial, LAN ports

Advantech has announced a fanless industrial computer that runs either Windows CE or Windows XP Embedded on a 1GHz Celeron M processor. The 1U-high UNO-4678 is intended for industrial automation and control applications, and boasts eight isolated serial ports along with three LAN ports.

The UNO-4678 comes with a 1 GHz Celeron M processor and 512MB of RAM. It can be supplied with a pre-configured Windows CE or Windows XP Embedded SP2 image, installed via the device's CompactFlash slot. However, if a customer prefers Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, or even Linux, these operating systems may be installed on an optional 2.5-inch hard disk drive, the company said.

The UNO-4678's front panel includes two USB ports, a PS/2 connector for keyboard and mouse, and indicator lights that monitor power and IDE status, plus Tx/Rx status for the device's serial ports. There are eight of the latter on the UNO-4678's busy back panel, including two on DB-9 connectors and six with screw terminal interfaces. The back panel also boasts three 10/100 Ethernet ports.

Advantech lists the following key features and specifications for the UNO-4678:

Processor -- Intel Celeron, clocked at 1 GHz
Memory -- 512MB of DDR DRAM
Display -- VGA output supports resolution up to 1600 x 1200
Storage:
- CompactFlash Type I/II slot
- Extension mounting kit for 2.5-inch HDD
I/O ports:
- DB15 VGA connector
- 3 x 10/100 RJ45 Ethernet
- 2 x USB 2.0
- 8 x RS232/422/485 serial:
  - 2 9-pin D connectors
  - 6 x 5-wire screw terminals
  - 2000VDC isolation and surge protection
  - Automatic RS485 data flow control
  - Tx/Rx indicators on front panel
- PS/2 keyboard and mouse
Power -- 9 to 36 VDC, 24 W typical
Dimensions -- 17.3 x 8.6 x 1.7 inches (440 x 220 x 44 mm), rack or wall mount
Weight -- 7.9 lbs (3.6 kg)

As suggested above, in addition to being compatible with Windows CE and Windows XP Embedded, the system also supports Linux as well as Windows 2000. It is available now, according to Advantech, though pricing was not stated.
