Tiny PXA270 SBC gets Windows CE 5.0 BSP

Adeneo has released an "official" Windows CE 5.0 board support package (BSP) for a tiny PXA270-based single-board computer (SBC) from Phytec. The PhyCore PXA270 SBC is based on a 520MHz processor, and includes 128 or 256 MB of SDRAM and 32 or 64 MB of flash.

In addition to supporting the Intel XScale PXA270 processor's built-in peripheral interfaces, the 2.2 x 2.8-inch PhyCore PXA270 module provides both Ethernet network and CAN fieldbus interfaces.

Phytec lists the following key features of the PhyCore PXA270 SBC:

520 MHz Intel XScale processor
32 or 64 MB flash memory
128 or 256 MB SDRAM
MMC/SD expansion interface
On-board power management
3 serial interfaces
10/100 Mbit Ethernet
Full 2.0B CAN SJA1000 interface
USB Host/Client port
SPI GPIO expander with 28 I/O Ports
JTAG interface
I2C EEPROM
2 user LEDs
-40 to +85 degrees C operating temp.

All I/O connections are provided on a pair of high-density 160-pin connectors on the underside of the module, which is intended to plug into custom application-specific baseboards, in a component-like manner.

Adeneo says its BSP integrates drivers for all standard interfaces available on the PhyCore module, and enables application developers to port Windows CE-based software onto custom Phycore-related baseboard designs with "minimal development effort and risk." The BSP meets Microsoft's PQOAL (production-quality OEM adaptation layer) specifications, and has been validated through testing with the Windows CE Test Kit (CETK), according to the company.

A free evaluation version of the BSP is available upon request, according to Adeneo. The package can be licensed in either binary or source form, with no per unit royalties.

Additionally, the company -- which is a Gold-level member of the Microsoft Windows Embedded Partner (WEP) program -- says it offers both hardware and software system integration services including custom baseboard designs to go with the PhyCore modules, as well as custom adaptations of the BSP software.

Phytec prices the PhyCore module at $439, for a single unit (configuration: 2 MB RAM, 128 MB flash, Ethernet, CAN, USB, SD, IDE).
