Windows Mobile powers "smallest" rugged mobile computer

Intermec is set to ship what it claims is the world's smallest rugged mobile computer. The CN3 runs Windows Mobile 5.0 with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP), and integrates WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and either GSM/EDGE or CDMA/EV-DO wireless functions, according to the company.

The 6.3 x 3.2 x 1.1-inch CN3 is offered with either a 2D imager for bar code scanning, or a 1.3 Mpixel camera. Users also get a choice between a backlit numeric keypad, or a full QWERTY keyboard that gives the unit the appearance of a Palm Treo or Motorola Q smartphone.

Intermec says the CN3 is priced lower than typical rugged WAN mobile computers and "combines a form factor and level of functionality previously met only by multiple devices."

The company lists the following key features and specifications for the CN3:

Processor -- PXA270 at 520 MHz
Memory -- 128MB of RAM, 128MB of flash
Display -- 3.5-inch QVGA, 16-bit color, TFT LCD with LED backlight
Scanner -- area imager supports omnidirectional 1D, 2D, composite and Postal decode capabilities plus signature capture
Camera -- 1.3 megapixel color with LED flash
Audio:
- dual speakers
- microphone
- wireless Bluetooth headset support
- wired external speaker support via vehicle dock
- VoIP
- speech recognition
I/O ports:
- USB 1.1 Host and Client
- RS232 via vehicle dock
- Ethernet via desktop single or quad dock
Expansion -- miniSD slot
Wireless:
- 802.11 WiFi, Cisco version 3 compatibility pending
- Bluetooth Class 2, V2.0
- GPS receiver with internal antenna
- choice of GSM/GPRS/EDGE or CDMA/1XRTT/EV-DO
Dimensions -- 6.3 x 3.2 x 1.1 inches (160 x 81 x 28 mm) with standard battery pack, 1.3 inches thick with extended battery pack
Weight -- 14.0 oz - 16.0 oz (397 - 454 g)

The CN3 supports Intermec's SmartSystems remote device management software that automatically carries out installation, routine maintenance, application software updates, security adjustments, and device settings, according to the company.

The CN3 is expected to ship in the fourth quarter of this year. Pricing was not disclosed.
