Fujitsu debuts small-format UMPC

Fujitsu on May 16 announced a line of ulta-mobile PCs (UMPCs) aimed at business users. Billed as the "world's smallest tablet-convertible UMPC," the FMV-U8240 sports a 5.6-inch 1024 x 600-pixel LCD, weighs 20.5 ounces, and will be offered with either Windows Vista or Windows XP Professional.

Fujitsu's new UMPC is based on Intel's recently introduced "Ultra Mobile Platform 2007" (UMP2007) silicon framework. The device is powered by an 800 MHz Intel A110 processor and Intel's 945GU Express chipset, and is equipped with either 512 MB or 1 GB of DDR2 SDRAM along with a 20 GB hard drive. The unit's 5.6-inch touchscreen LCD features a "WSVGA" resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, and its keyboard provides 56 keys.

The FMV-U8240 includes 10/100 Ethernet and three USB2.0 interfaces ports, as well as a built-in microphone and speaker along with audio in/out connectors. It's equipped with integrated WiFi, but lacks Bluetooth. Two types of expansion slots -- for SD and CF cards -- enable the addition of functions such as a cellular modem card, flash memory, and more.

The device measures 6.7 x 5.2 x 1.0 inches (171 x 133 x 26.5mm).

In addition to these typical UMPC features, the FMV-U8240 also provides a variety of security capabilities that aim to please enterprise IT administrators, including a "security chip" and a built-in fingerprint scanner. The device comes standard with software that can be used to disable its USB port or recordable media drives, and its USB ports can be configured to accept only administrator-approved devices. The unit can also be supplied with Windows Vista Enterprise, which includes Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption, Fujitsu said.

The Windows XP version of the FMV-U8240 is expected to be available in mid June with suggested retail prices ranging from 144,000 to 164,000 yen (approx. $1,185 to $1,350), according to Fujitsu. The Windows Vista version is expected in early July.
